Why “Durability” Is Becoming a Key Topic in Endurance Training

Introduction

In endurance sports, performance discussions often focus on metrics such as VO₂max, lactate threshold or running economy.

 

In recent years, however, another concept has gained attention among coaches and athletes: durability.

 

Durability is often described as an athlete’s ability to maintain movement efficiency and performance as fatigue accumulates during prolonged exercise.

 

Rather than focusing only on peak performance, the concept looks at how well athletes sustain quality movement over time.


What Does Durability Mean for Runners?

In running, durability is often discussed in relation to how well athletes maintain their mechanics during long efforts.

As fatigue increases, runners may notice changes such as:

  • reduced cadence  
  • shorter stride length  
  • less stable posture  
  • decreased coordination  

Durability can therefore be understood as the ability to limit these changes as fatigue builds during longer runs or races.


Why the Topic Is Getting More Attention

Some coaches and athletes suggest that endurance races are not decided only by peak physiological values.

 

While metrics like VO₂max can indicate aerobic potential, performance during long races may also depend on how efficiently an athlete continues to move as fatigue increases.

 

This has led to increasing discussions about fatigue resistance and how athletes can maintain stable running mechanics throughout longer efforts.

 

It is worth noting that the concept of durability is still evolving, and different coaches may define it slightly differently.


Training Approaches Often Linked to Durability

Although there is no single training method that defines durability, several approaches are often mentioned in coaching discussions.

 

Long aerobic runs

  • Extended low-intensity runs may help athletes develop fatigue resistance and become more accustomed to maintaining efficient movement patterns over longer durations.

Training with accumulated fatigue

  • Some training structures include sessions performed after prior fatigue. The idea is to practice coordination, pacing and technique when the body is already under stress.

Running drills and coordination work

  • Neuromuscular coordination can influence running mechanics. Short technique drills are sometimes used to reinforce efficient movement patterns and rhythm.


Durability and Running Technique

As fatigue builds, small changes in running mechanics may gradually increase the energy cost of running.

 

Posture may become less stable, cadence may change and coordination may decrease.

 

For this reason, some coaches consider running technique and coordination an important aspect when discussing durability.

Durability is not yet defined as precisely as traditional endurance metrics such as VO₂max or lactate threshold.

 

Instead, it represents a broader perspective on endurance performance: the ability to maintain efficient movement and performance as fatigue develops.

 

As research and coaching practices continue to evolve, the concept will likely become clearer.

 

For runners, durability may simply highlight the importance of sustaining quality movement throughout longer efforts.
